I hate to say it, but even today there are barriers to women being as successful as men. Prejudice and sexism still exist, even if the media tries to bush over the subjects. Men still get paid more than women for the same jobs in some industries. Large corporations find ways to cover this up and keep everyone ignorant to the matter. From one woman to another, if you want to be valued, appreciated, challenged, free and financially independent then you need to choose the freelance entrepreneurial lifestyle that so many women are now opting for.
The Power To Be Your Own Boss
Being your own boss is a dream for most people. Getting to choose how you work, when you work and what you work on. But any freelance entrepreneur will tell you that there is much more to it than that. Being your own boss means being super organised, having excellent time management skills, communication skill, accounting skills and so much more! As your own boss, you’re responsible for running a business. This isn’t like playing pretend at kindergarten. It’s very much real and there are so many legal, financial and ethical implications of running a business.
The good news is that, as a woman, we were born to multi task. We can juggle a million and one things without batting an eyelid. Yes, I’m exaggerating, but I’m making a point. I could go into the evolutionary reasons why women are better at multitasking than men, but for now, just take my word for it. We are capable of managing our time, our money, our household, our jobs, daily chores. The fact of the matter is, woman are just better at all of this than men are. What I do in one day, my boyfriend couldn’t manage to do in one week! The bottom line is, being your own boss is by no means an easy task, but it’s so worth it. If you can manage everything else that comes along with having a business, go for it!
Most 9-5 office jobs don’t allow you a lot of freedom. You get up, go to work, come home and that’s your day pretty much over. As your own boss, you can work from home, or anywhere you want for that matter. You can become geographically independent. Live wherever you want to, travel the world because your running an online business. All you need to keep up and running is your computer.
Not only will being a freelance entrepreneur give you freedom over your location. As women, you’ll have the freedom to have a family and spend time with them. More and more women are having children later in life or not at all because they’re focusing on their careers. And they have every right to do so. But what if you want to have both? Most conventional jobs get in the way of that dream. How can you hold down a 9-5 job, afford childcare and also spend enough time with your family? It’s a mammoth challenge. Being a freelance entrepreneur will allow you to have a successful business AND a family. The best of both worlds, without having to compromise on either. You can spend time with and raise a family while continuing to work as your own boss!
Large corporations try and tip-toe around the subject of gender inequality when it comes to salary. They use tactics such as giving men and women different job titles, for exactly the same job role, in order to pay women less. Many people remain ignorant or turn a blind eye to the fact. As a woman, you have every right to earn as much, or more than a man. Long gone are the days of men being the ‘breadwinners’.
As a freelance entrepreneur, you’ll have the power to set your prices and earn what you deserve to earn. Believe it or not, but charging $100 as a freelancer really isn’t all that much. How much do you think corporate business earn an hour? $1,000, $2,000… More. That just puts it into perspective for you. Being able to set your own income, and raise it when the time comes, will give you and your family more financial stability.
A Career You Love
How many women get stuck in dead end jobs? How many women do jobs that they cannot stand, just to make ends meet? How many women are just living for the weekends? I’m willing to bet that if there was a statistic for this, it would be truly horrifying. If you choose to become a freelance entrepreneur, it will be doing something you love! If your passion is keeping fit and being healthy, you can turn that into a business idea. If you’re a huge bookworm and want to turn your hand to writing novels, you can make a business out of that. If you’re that friend that everyone goes to for advice, yep, you guessed it, you can use that to fuel a business.
This is the beauty of being a freelance entrepreneur. There is no limit to what you can do. Whatever your passion is, there will be a way to transform it into a successful business. Just imagine waking up every morning raring to start work and going to bed every night feeling that you’ve achieved something.
Growth & Development
In a dead end 9-5 job, there is very little room for development. Speaking from experience, I felt constantly bored in my desk job. Even though I was busy, the work I was doing did not challenge me in anyway. I’m the kind of person that needs to be challenged in order to feel professionally fulfilled. That’s why I started to code and enjoyed it so much, because it offered me a mental challenge that my full time job did not.
When you’re a freelance entrepreneur, you can keep challenging yourself by learning new skills and developing your business to your heart’s content. The sky’s the limit. I’m a web developer who morphed into ghostwriting also. Another web developer I know built up her business then changed its direction completely. Instead of building site and doing client work, she used her skills and knowledge to create a course and mentor others in learning to code. There is no dead end when you run your own business.
Stop dreaming and do it. If, like so many other women, you can relate to everything I’ve said, you need to stop dragging your heels. Stop worrying, stop making excuses and just do it. Find your passion and use it to fuel an online business. Become a freelance entrepreneur. Be free, empowered and most importantly, happy. What are you waiting for? GO!
